Massive Solar Storm Lights Up New Zealand Skies with Aurora Australis
Kiwis were treated to a spectacular celestial show overnight as a massive solar storm triggered one of the strongest Aurora Australis displays in decades. From Stewart Island to Northland, the skies erupted in waves of pink, green, and violet.
A Rare Nationwide Display
Typically confined to the deep south, this aurora was visible as far north as Auckland and the Bay of Islands. Social media was flooded with stunning photographs taken from backyards and beaches across the country.
"I've never seen anything like it," said Auckland resident Sarah Jenkins. "I looked up and the sky was just dancing. You didn't even need a camera to see the colors."
The Science Behind the Light
The event was caused by a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) from the sun that impacted Earth's magnetic field on Tuesday evening. Transpower, the national grid operator, issued a warning about potential induced currents but confirmed that the power grid held up well against the geomagnetic disturbance.
Astronomers say we are currently at the peak of the solar cycle, meaning more such displays could be on the cards for 2026.
