Germany
Driving through Baden-Württemberg just got a lot more futuristic. A 5-kilometer stretch of the A81 Autobahn has been covered with a translucent solar canopy, marking the start of Germany's ambitious 'Solar Roads' initiative.
Double Utility
The project serves two purposes: generating clean energy and protecting the road surface from extreme weather. The canopy is expected to generate enough electricity to power a small town, feeding directly into the local grid.
Engineering Marvel
Constructing a roof over a high-speed motorway without disrupting traffic was an engineering challenge. The modular design allowed for rapid assembly at night. The structure is robust enough to withstand storms and provides shade that reduces the urban heat island effect.
Global Interest
Delegations from across the EU and as far as China have visited the site. If the pilot proves cost-effective, Germany plans to expand the canopy to cover 10% of its Autobahn network by 2035.
