Nefertiti

January 30, 2026By Splittly Team5 min read

The Queen of the Nile belongs on the Nile. That is the message coming loud and clear from Cairo this week as Egypt renews its century-old demand for the return of the iconic Bust of Nefertiti from Berlin's Neues Museum.

A New Era for Egyptian Heritage

The timing is no coincidence. With the long-awaited full opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) near the Giza Pyramids, Egypt finally has a state-of-the-art home for its greatest treasures.

"You've had her long enough," declared Dr. Zahi Hawass, the famed Egyptologist, in a fiery op-ed published this week. "The era of colonial looting is over. Nefertiti left Egypt illegally, and she must return to inspire her own people."

Berlin's Stance

German officials, however, are holding their ground. The Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, which oversees Berlin's museums, maintains that the bust was acquired legally in 1913 following a division of archaeological finds. They also cite the bust's fragility as a reason against travel.

"Nefertiti is the ambassador of Egypt in Berlin," a museum spokesperson reiterated. But this diplomatic answer is wearing thin as other Western nations, including France and the Netherlands, begin to repatriate looted artifacts to Africa.

The Global Debate

The case of Nefertiti is becoming a litmus test for the "decolonization" of museums worldwide. If Germany yields, it could set a precedent for the British Museum and the Rosetta Stone or the Elgin Marbles.

For now, the Beautiful One remains in her glass case in Berlin, but the pressure from the south is hotter than ever. 2026 might just be the year the conversation shifts from "if" to "when."
