Towns in western New South Wales and northern Victoria are in the bullseye, but coastal cities like Sydney and Melbourne won't escape the swelter, with high humidity making 35°C feel closer to 40°C.

With air conditioners set to run around the clock, the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) has flagged potential blackouts. Residents are being asked to conserve energy during peak evening hours to prevent grid failure.
"It's a choice between comfort and the lights staying on," warned Energy Minister Chris Bowen. "We need everyone to pull together."
